The female experience can be accompanied by unique challenges that require specialization and expertise to address in a holistic and integrated way. These challenges can be exacerbated by both external and internal pressures perpetuated by societal expectations and role assumptions. Issues may include:
- Perinatal Loss
- Infertility
- Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders
- Transitions and Life Changes
- Sexual Assault
- Military Sexual Assault
- Veterans’ Issues
How therapy can help
Research shows that 15-20% of women experience significant mental health symptoms during pregnancy. Most are unaware that their symptoms are secondary to the perinatal experience and often do not seek support. However, therapy in this population has been proven to help alleviate symptoms and promote full recovery of these mental health complications.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 5 women have experienced sexual assault. Therapy can assist in helping victims of sexual assault in telling their truth, addressing the trauma, and alleviating the symptoms of psychological distress that accompanies the experience of violent trauma.
