LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy for Youth
Identity development is a central task of adolescence – exploring who we are as people, our values and interests, who we are as friends and members of the community, and how we overcome challenges and move toward our goals. Caregivers and therapists have a beautiful opportunity to support teens through this journey, and in turn support them in building a strong foundation of self that they’ll carry into adulthood.
As LGBTQ+ affirming therapists, we want to make sure that teens have a safe and supportive space to explore all aspects of their lives and identities, including sexual orientation and sexuality, gender expression and identity, and relationships. Affirming therapy for youth is all about helping teens understand themselves and their experiences, providing a nonjudgemental space for exploration and expression, and developing skills that will help them lead healthy and meaningful lives.
Supporting Caregivers of LGBTQ+ Youth
The presence of supportive and loving adults has a significant positive impact on the emotional and social well-being of LGBTQ+ youth. And we recognize that caregivers may not always know how to show up for their teen while also navigating their own emotions and expectations relating to their teen’s identity. Our affirming therapists are here to support caregivers of LGBTQ+ youth by offering education and coaching to caregivers, and by offering a safe environment to process caregiver concerns so that they can show up in a loving and supportive way with their teens. Our therapists can also provide support in the form of advocacy and facilitating caring conversations between adolescents and their caregivers, and with other health and education professionals as appropriate.
It may be helpful to note that as LGBTQ+ affirming therapists that work with queer, trans, and gender expansive youth, we do not have an agenda for our clients when it comes to their gender expression and identity or sexual orientation. Our role is to support teens through their journey toward self-actualization and enhanced well-being, to nurture both self-efficacy and a strong community, and ultimately to empower clients to live lives filled with meaning and connection.
