National Eating Disorder Awareness

National Eating Disorder Awareness

National Eating Disorder Awareness Week is from February 26th to March 4th, 2017.

The purpose of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is to bring attention and resources to those family members, friends, or persons who may be concerned or in need.

Eating disorders can include anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorders and are serious illnesses that have the highest mortality rate among mental health concerns. They can strongly impact the individual’s attitudes, behaviors, and emotions surrounding food and body image. Eating disorders can co-occur with other conditions including depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

On average, 30 million Americans struggle with an eating disorder at some point in their lives, according to the National Eating Disorder Association.

Becoming familiar with warning signs and symptoms can be imperative to helping support someone you may be concerned about.
